How much does house cleaning cost?

Professional cleaners in the U.S. typically charge $40–$55 per labor hour in an average market, about $30–$40 in lower-cost areas and $55–$75 in big, expensive cities. The price of a visit comes down to how many labor hours your home needs, which depends mostly on square footage, the number of bathrooms and the kind of cleaning you book.

Recurring cleaning is cheaper per visit

A home that is cleaned every week or two stays in better shape, so each visit is faster. Most companies pass that on as a discount for recurring service.

What changes the price

Standard vs. deep vs. move-out cleaning

Standard cleaning keeps a home tidy: dusting reachable surfaces, vacuuming and mopping, wiping kitchen counters and appliance fronts, and cleaning bathrooms. Deep cleaning adds detail work such as baseboards, door frames, light switches, vents and built-up grime. Move-out cleaning is a deep clean of an empty home plus the inside of cabinets, drawers and appliances, and is what landlords expect before returning a deposit.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a house cleaning cost per hour?

Most U.S. cleaning companies charge about $40–$55 per labor hour in average markets. Independent cleaners are often a little cheaper, $30–$45 per hour, while companies in large cities may charge $60–$75.

How much should I pay for a 3-bedroom house to be cleaned?

For a standard one-time clean of a 3-bed, 2-bath home of about 1,600 sq ft, expect roughly $170–$230. A deep clean of the same home is about $335–$465.

Do you tip house cleaners?

Tipping is common but not required. Many people tip 15–20% for a one-time or deep clean, and give a holiday tip equal to one visit for a regular cleaner.

Is it cheaper to pay a cleaner by the hour or a flat rate?

Flat rates are easier to compare and protect you if the job takes longer. Hourly pricing can be cheaper for small or very tidy homes. Ask for a flat quote after the cleaner has seen the home.
